Annette vs. Annie

In addition to becoming the youngest person ever to win a World Series of Poker (WSOP) or World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) tournament, as well as the first female to win a WSOP or WSOPE Main Event, 18-year-old Norwegian teen poker queen Annette Obrestad has also shattered two other poker records.
First, she surpassed American Annie Duke’s record for the most money won by a female in a career in WSOP/WSOPE tournament play.
Duke had earned just short of $1 million in lifetime WSOP and WSOPE tourney winnings when she came in 21st in the WSOPE Main Event and earned another $62,000, putting her over the $1 million mark.
But a day later, Obrestad won the WSOPE Main Event, earning just over $2 million and passing Duke.
Second, Oberstad surpassed Duke’s record for the most money won by a female in any poker tournament.
Duke had earned $2 million by winning the 2004 Tournament of Champions, a made-for-television, invitation-only tournament sponsored by Harrah’s and featuring nine top poker pros.
But by winning the WSOPE Main Event, Obrestad earned a million British pounds, and with a pound currently worth just over two U.S. dollars, the exact take was $2,013,102–or just over 13 grand more than Duke earned.
All is not bleak for Annie “The Duchess of Poker” Duke, however.
For instance, Obrestad will never break Duke’s record of being the first female ever to earn a championship gold bracelet for winning a WSOP or WSOPE event.
Duke earned that honor by winning a WSOP Omaha tourney in 2004.
In addition, the 42-year-old Duke has finished in the money in 34 WSOP or WSOPE events in her lifetime, a mark Obrestad–who’s moneyed in one WSOP/WSOPE event–will likely not challenge for a long time.
