A Danish court has ruled that private poker tournaments are illegal in
Denmark because poker is a game of luck, not skill, making it gambling
and against the law.
The Copenhagen Post, a Danish newspaper, reported last week that
Denmark’s Eastern High Court ruled that poker tournaments run by the
Danish Poker Federation, a private organization, are illegal.

In a land where illegal moonshine whiskey was once the king of
contraband, the new kings on the block are the kings of clubs, diamonds,
hearts and spades.
Authorities in the State of South Carolina last week raided a popular
restaurant, arrested its 81-year-old owner and two employees and seized
34 illegal video poker machines and almost $400,000 in cash.

A Canadian resident who ran an online gambling site that featured poker
and
other games was found shot to death Saturday in Vancouver, British
Columbia, Canada.
According to media reports, James Po Ho Cheung, 45, of Vancouver, the
president and chief executive officer
of 777 Sports Entertainment Group, was found by police at around 2 a.m.
shot to death and slumped over in a blood-splattered late-model Cadillac
that was parked behind his residence.

The owner of a New Hampshire bar has been fined almost $28,000 for
paying out $332 in illegal video poker winnings.
According to media reports, Eli Sokorelis, 61, of Portsmouth, N.H.,
pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of gambling, in connection with
his having an illegal video poker machine at his State Street Saloon,
also in Portsmouth.

A British man playing in his first online poker tournament at online
poker room Titan Poker (www.titanpoker.com) won the tourney–and
$220,000!
According to Titan Poker, Luke Cahill of Manchester, England, captured
first place and the top prize of $220,000 last week in the online poker
room’s European Championship of Online Poker.

An ex-North Carolina sheriff and three ex-deputies, whose job included
keeping their county clean of unlawful gambling, have been indicted on
extortion charges for accepting bribes from illegal video poker
operators to look the other way.
According to news reports out of Ashville, N.C., indicted were former
Buncombe County Sheriff Bobby Medford and former Buncombe County
Deputies Lt. Ronnie Eugene “Butch” Davis, Capt. Guy Penland and Lt. John
Harrison.

Harrah’s Entertainment, Inc., owner of the World Series of Poker (WSOP),
announced this week that the 2008 WSOP will for the first time begin and
end with $10,000 buy-in world championship events and feature a total of
eight $10,000 championships.=A0
In addition, Harrah’s said, the 55-event schedule for 2008 includes a
total of eight $1,500 buy-in no-limit Texas hold ‘em tournaments, which
usually draw the largest fields except for the main event.

Annette Obrestad, the Norwegian teen who became the youngest person ever
to win a World Series of Poker championship gold bracelet when she won
the main event this year of the inaugural World Series of Poker Europe,
has shattered another youth-oriented record.
Last week, at the European Poker Awards in Paris, France, she became the
youngest person ever to win the coveted Tournament Performance of the
Year Award.

To celebrate new license plates in the State of Utah that picture snow
scenes and skiing, a ski group is awarding prizes to state residents
based on poker hands derived from their license plates.
The new ski-themed license plate in the state was recently issued by the
Utah Division of Motor Vehicles.

Political correctness has officially run amok in Sacramento, California,
USA.
Government officials there want to change the name of a steet–because
it has the word “poker” in it.
According to news reports out of the California capital city, the
Sacramento County Board of Supervisors is considering changing the name
of a street near a new high school because of what the Board considers a
“negative message.”

The managing editor of a popular poker magazine has been fired for his
role in the latest cheating scandal to rock the online poker world.
Bluff Magazine, which has both print and online editions, announced
Monday that it had canned its 24-year-old managing editor, Chris Vaughn.

Authorities in the Chicago area announced Thursday that they had busted
11 local businesses for illegal gambling and had seized 32 illegal video
poker marchines.
According to a news release by the Cook County Sherriff’s Office: “A
crackdown on illegal gambling culminated Wednesday night with the
seizure of nearly three dozen video poker machines and more than $5,200
in cash from businesses throughout the west and south suburbs, Cook
County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart said Thursday.

Professional poker player David Edward “Chip” Reese, who won almost $3
million in career tournament earnings and three World Series of Poker
(WSOP) championship gold bracelets, died Monday in Las Vegas of
complications from pneumonia.
He was 56.

Officials in the U.S. continue to crack down on illegal poker playing
throughout the country, with the latest bust occurring in the State of
Colorado.
Law enforcement authorities announced Monday in Fort Collins, Colo.,
that three people have been arrested for running an illegal high-stakes
poker game in which the house received a percentage of the money
wagered.
