N.J. Poker Den Busted
Written by Tom Somach in Poker NewsThe nationwide crackdown on illegal poker continues.
Police broke up an illegal poker game in Englewood Cliffs, N.J., USA, on Friday and arrested four people.
According to media reports, Englewood Cliffs police officers raided a private residence Friday morning, arrested four people and charged three with gambling offenses and one with drug offenses.
Undercover police officers had previously infiltrated the game and monitored the action, noting that the organizers of the game were running a game six nights a week and illegally taking a “rake” or cut of each poker hand, the reports said.
Police sad the “rake” is what makes the game illegal–had there been no rake, the game would have been fine, the reports said.
Police were originally tipped off to the illegal poker lair by neighbors who observed suspicious activity at the residence, the reports said.
Police arrested Abraham Y. Kim, 25, of Englewood Cliffs, who lived at the raided residence, Lamont S. Villegas, 33, of Fort Lee, N.J., and Alex Torres, 25, of Fairview, N.J., and charged them with maintaining a gambling resort, the reports said.
A fourth man, Alexander Madera, 19, also of Fairview, was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, the reports said.
