Poker Viking Wins Again
Written by Tom Somach in Poker NewsAnnette Obrestad, the Norwegian teen who became the youngest person ever to win a World Series of Poker championship gold bracelet when she won the main event this year of the inaugural World Series of Poker Europe, has shattered another youth-oriented record.
Last week, at the European Poker Awards in Paris, France, she became the youngest person ever to win the coveted Tournament Performance of the Year Award.
The award was in recognition of that record-setting WSOPE victory, which occurred in London, England, just days before Obrestad’s 20th birthday.
Award presenter Nic Szeremeta of Poker Europa, in giving her the hardware, called her WSOPE win “phenomenal.”
In winning the award, Obrestad beat out four other nominees: Bruno Fitoussi of France, Carlos Mortensen of Spain, Ram Vaswani of the U.K. and Alex “The Mad Russian” Kravchenko of Russia.
Obrestad was also nominated for two other European Poker Awards, the Rookie of the Year Award and the Leading Lady Award, but didn’t win either of those.
“I am so happy to win this award,” she said of the Tournament Performance of the Year Award. “I prefer this one than Rookie of the Year because I was up against such great players.
“I am still learning so much,” she continued. “There are still a lot of areas of my live game that can improve: my instincts, my ability to know what certain tells mean. But, I am getting better all the time.”
Obrestad is a paid spokeswoman for online poker room Betfair Poker (www.betfair.com), so Betfair’s director of poker Bruce Stubbs chimed in with his two cents on his shill’s latest big win.
“She is a pleasure to work with and a special player,” Stubbs said.
“She is also possibly one of the most competitive people I have met. In fact, I suspect she wanted to win all the awards.”
