Never one to overdo a subject to death, Hollywood has come out with yet another movie about poker.

The latest poker flick, “The Grand,” is scheduled to open in movie theaters in New York and Los Angeles on March 21, and in the rest of the USA, as well as Canada and elsewhere, two weeks later.

Described as a mockumentary–mock documentary–about a poker tournament in Las Vegas, the film was written by Zak Penn and Matt Bierman and produced by Penn and Gary Marcus.

“The Grand” stars Woody “White Men Can’t Jump” Harrelson, David Cross, Dennis “Law and Order” Farina, Cheryl “Curb Your Enthusiasm” Hines, Richard “Spin City” Kind, Chris Parnell, Ray “Everybody Loves Raymond” Romano, Werner Herzog and Gabe “Welcome Back, Kotter” Kaplan. =A0 In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, a trade publication about the entertainment industry, Penn said the movie, for the most part, did not have scripted dialogue, but instead relied on the actors improvising lines on the spot.

“I have an outline that describes who’s in the scene and what’s happening, but there’s maybe four or five lines of dialogue in the movie that are scripted and the rest of it is just the actors figuring out the scenes themselves,” Penn said.

“The dialogue is spontaneous,” he said. “A lot of the actors take their own notes. It’s kind of every man for himself. It’s almost like a group written thing. What’s crazy about it, I know, is that it seems hard to believe that it’s all improvised, but it really is.”

Hopefully for Penn, his film will do better than the last poker movie Hollywood foisted upon the public.

“Lucky You,” a poker movie starring Drew Barrymore that came out last year, bombed at the box office and was savaged by film critics.
