‘Lucky You’ on TV

Written by Tom Somach in Poker News

“Lucky You,” the poker-themed movie starring Drew Barrymore and Eric Bana that played in movie theaters last year, debuts on television tonight.

The film, about the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas, is scheduled to air on cable channel HBO tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern Time in the USA.

Then, as is HBO custom,”Lucky You” will re-air numerous times in the coming weeks.

When it opened last year, “Lucky You” bombed big-time, and on two fronts.

It failed miserably at the box office in its first week of showing, being one of the most poorly-attended premiering movies of the week.

It was also universally panned by film critics, who savaged the movie’s writing, acting and plot.

HBO, however, considers none of that, and instead is promoting the movie as if it were the second coming of a film classic like “Gone With the Wind.”

The blurb that HBO provided to TV Guide to describe the movie reads as follows:

“Drew Barrymore and Eric Bana are aces in this winning comedy-romance set in and around Las Vegas casinos. She’s an aspiring lounge singer who falls for a poker-playing stud who lives fast, plays hard and has a tendency to win big and lose bigger. Robert Duvall co-stars as Bana’s cardsharp-legend dad.”

The stars are aces?

In a winning comedy-romance?

Then why does the blurb only give the film two out of four stars?
