Mixed Reviews for Flick
Written by Tom Somach in Poker News“The Grand,” a new movie about poker that opened in theaters last month, is getting some grand–and not so grand–attention.
Since opening on March 21, the movie has been getting mixed reviews from film critics around the U.S. and Canada. =A0 Here’s a sampling of what’s being said:
The Seattle Post-Intellligencer called the movie “a winning hand” and gave it a grade of B.
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune called the film “a sure bet” and gave it three stars out of four.
The Toronto Globe and Mail said the movie is “a memorable comedy” and gave it three stars out of four.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch said the movie is a mix of “hilarity” and “bored silence” and gave it a grade of B.
The San Jose Mercury News called the film “monotonous” and gave it a grade of C+.
The Chicago Tribune called the flick “ill-served” and gave it one star out of four.
“The Grand” is described by its creators as a “mockumentary” or mock documentary about a Las Vegas poker tournament and was written by Zak Penn and Matt Bierman and produced by Penn and Gary Marcus.
The motion picture stars Woody =E2=80=9CWhite Men Can=E2=80=99t Jump=E2=80=9D Harrelson, David Cross, Dennis =E2=80=9CLaw and Order=E2=80=9D Farina, Cheryl =E2=80=9CCurb Your Enthusiasm=E2=80=9D Hines, Richard =E2=80=9CSpin City=E2=80=9D Kind, Jason “Seinfeld” Alexander, Chris Parnell, Ray =E2=80=9CEverybody Loves Raymond=E2=80=9D Romano, Werner Herzog and Gabe =E2=80=9CWelcome Back, Kotter=E2=80=9D Kaplan.
In addition, several real-life poker pros make cameo appearances in the film, including Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson, Daniel Negreanu and Phil “Poker Brat” Hellmuth Jr.
