Pros React
Written by Tom Somach in Poker NewsReaction from the poker world has been mixed regarding the announcement that the Final Table of the next World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event will be played four months after it is determined.
The delay was made to increase hype, as well as allow same-day TV coverage of the Final Table.
Some poker pros welcome the change, while others are blasting it.
Here’s a sampling of reaction:
DANIEL NEGREANU: “It’s going to create way more buzz. It’s going to be more like a live event.”
DOYLE “TEXAS DOLLY” BRUNSON: “Frankly, I don’t like it. I guess it will create a lot of hype. It seems a little overkill or something to me.”
HEVAD KHAN: “I feel it’s a big tease to people who want to wake up the next day and win the big bucks. I think this idea is fresh, but needs some more adjusting and review.”
JOHNNY “THE ORIENT EXPRESS” CHAN: “The new format will allow players to connect with sponsors who come to them and want them to wear a patch or logo for X amount of dollars.”
ISABELLE MERCIER: “The delayed final would give some great exposure to the finalists and plenty of time to get in good shape for the final. But it would probably favor the amateurs who would have time to train with a pro. My opinion, they should play the final straight with the tournament and not months later.”
CHAD BROWN: “It doesn’t bother me to have the Final Table later, but I do think it will be an advantage to the amateur players, because they will have time to get coaching and a scouting report against the better players.”
GREG “FOSSILMAN” RAYMER: “It might be huge for the continued growth of poker. However, the down side is this long gap allows the players to become completely different people between the time they make the Final Table and when they play it.”
