Wampum Raised
Written by Tom Somach in Poker NewsA nice array of pro athletes, rock stars, pro poker players and Hollywood actors turned out for a celebrity poker tournament Thursday that was co-hosted by poker pro Annie Duke and actor Don Cheadle for charity.
The event, held at the San Manuel Indian casino in Highland, California, USA, raised funds and awareness for the crisis in Darfur.
According to media accounts of the event, celebs who attended included Los Angeles Dodgers Scott Proctor, Gary Bennett and James Loney, former pro football player Roland Williams, pro motocross racer Jimmy Button, rock stars Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains and Scott Ian of Anthrax, poker pros Howard “The Professor” Lederer, Phil “Unabomber” Laak, Andy Bloch, Chris “Jesus” Ferguson and Duke, and actors Joshua Molina of “West Wing,” Willie Garson of “Sex and the City” and Cheadle.
In addition to the funds raised by the charity no-limit Texas hold ‘em tourney, the casino itself donated a sizeable sum to the cause.
The total amount raised at the event has not yet been released.
Specifically, all the proceeds from the event will go to Not On Our Watch (NOOW), an organization founded by actors George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and Cheadle to, in their words, “focus global attention and resources towards putting an end to mass atrocities around the world.”
The group says it has adopted the crisis in Darfur, the Sudan, Africa, as its inaugural campaign.
