4 for Negs

Written by Tom Somach in Poker News

Golfers yell “Fore!”

Now poker player Daniel “Kid Poker” Negreanu can yell “Four!”

Negreanu, who had won three World Series of Poker (WSOP) championship gold bracelets in his storied career and is the top Canadian player in the world, has now won his fourth.

The win came in Event #20 at the 2008 WSOP in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, a $2,000 buy-in, limit Texas hold ‘em tournament that had 480 entrants and a total prize pool of about $900,000. The Top 45 finishers cashed out.

The colorful and controversial Negreanu, whose wacky antics including announcing his divorce on his Internet blog and waging a running feud with fellow pro Annie Duke, picks up $204,874 for the victory. Originally from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, he now lives in Las Vegas.

The runnerup in the tournament was Ugur “The Turk” Marangoz, a Turkish immigrant who lives in Las Vegas. He collected $126,671 and became the highest-finishing Turkish player ever in a WSOP event.

Coming in third was David Baker of Katy, Texas, USA, who happily earns $78,624 he’ll have to pay taxes on.

Fourth was Richard Li of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, winning $63,335 and that’s no lie.

Fifth was Fu Bo Wong of Chandler, Arizona, USA, earning $51,435.

Sixth was Jeremy Kottler of Cleveland, Ohio, USA, collecting $40,622.

Seventh was Greg Wohletz of Henderson, Nevada, USA, snagging $31,820.

Eighth was Derek Lerner of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, who’s learned enough about poker to take home $25,334.

Ninth was Hien Tran of Sacramento, California, USA, garnering $18,782.

Tenth was Daniel Makowsky of Zurich, Switzerland, who can add $12,230 to his Swiss bank account.

As for Negreanu, this was the 29th time in his career that he has cashed out in a WSOP event, and it was his first WSOP win since 2004.

His first-ever WSOP victory came in 1998, when the cunning Canuck won the first WSOP event he ever entered, and at age 23 became the youngest bracelet-winner in history (that record has since been broken several times).

After slipping a glistening Gold Bracelet No. 4 around his wrist, Negreanu, 33, told reporters he credits his pal Mike “The Mouth” Matusow as the impetus for the latest piece of jewelry.

Just a day earlier, in another WSOP tourney, Matusow had won his third lifetime WSOP bracelet, to pull even with Negreanu for a career.

“I could not stand for Matusow to be in the same gold bracelet category and promptly went out tonight and did something about it,” Negreanu said.

He was only half-kidding.
