A Pennsylvania man who earned almost half-a-million dollars by winning a
poker tournament at the 2008 World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas
says he’s going to donate all of it to charity.
Eric Brooks of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, USA, won WSOP Event #14, a
$10,000 buy-in, 7-card stud tourney with 158 participants and a total
prize pool of about $1.5 million.

A 37-year-old fire department groupie originally from South Carolina and
playing in his first World Series of Poker (WSOP) tournament has won
it–and now vows to give 25% of his winnings to his hometown
firefighters.
Jimmy Shultz, who now lives in Columbus, Ohio, USA, but who is
originally from Charleston, South Carolina, USA, wore a Charleston Fire
Department cap as his headwear of choice as he competed in Las Vegas,
Nevada, USA, in WSOP Event #12, a $1,500 buy-in, limit Texas hold ‘em
tourney that had 883 entrants and a total prize pool of $1.2 million.
The lucky cap paid off, and paid off well, as Shultz, who is not a
firefighter himself but who knows many in the department, won the event
and the $257,105 top prize.

But now, 55-year-old Philip Tom of Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, has his own
notoriety, after winning Event #11 at the World Series of Poker (WSOP)
in Vegas.

A 44-year-old immigrant from Iran who came to the USA to learn medicine,
but instead learned poker, has won Event #10 at the 2008 World Series of
Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
Farzad “Freddy” Rouhani, now of Germantown, Maryland, USA, came to the
USA 23 years ago to attend medical school.

A 22-year-old college dropout from Missouri has dropped in to Las Vegas
and won Event #8 of the 2008 World Series of Poker (WSOP).
The event, a $10,000 buy-in, mixed games tournament that drew 192
players and had a total prize pool of about $1.8 million, was won by
Anthony Rivera.

similar event at last year’s World Series of Poker (WSOP) has won it
this year.
Thang Luu, who emigrated to the USA in 1992 at age 17 and who now
resides in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, has won Event #6 of the 2008 WSOP in
Las Vegas, a $1,500 buy-in, Omaha hi-lo 8 or better tournament that had
833 entrants and a total prize pool of about $1.1 million.

A 23-year-old Canadian who honed his poker skills playing online is the
winner of Event #5 of the 2008 World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las
Vegas, Nevada, USA.
The event, a $1,000 buy-in, no-limit Texas hold ‘em tournament with
rebuys, drew 766 entrants and had a total prize pool of about $3
million.

A Michigan woman who was arrested in April for leaving her children
alone in a parked car for hours while she played poker in a nearby bar
has been fined $450 and ordered to take so-called parenting classes.
According to media reports, Diem Thi Tran, a 36-year-old Vietnamese
immigrant who speaks no English and resides in Grandville, Michigan,
USA, was told by Judge Steven Timmers on Thursday that
if she paid the fines and met other conditions within six months, her
criminal charges would be dismissed.

He is David Singer, a Vegas resident no less, and he is the winner of

USA, a $1,500 buy-in, pot-limit Texas hold ‘em tourney that had 713
entrants and a total prize pool of just over $1 million.

Top poker pro Annie Duke is missing the first week of the World Series
of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas due to a broken pelvis she suffered in a
running accident.
According to her blog on her website,=A0 www.annieduke.com, she suffered
a triple pelvic fracture while jogging.

Online poker room Ultimate Bet (www.ultimatebet.com) has confirmed that
cheating occurred in the room, and it vowed to do everything it can to
prevent a recurrence of the incident.
Several months ago, reports surfaced on poker posting forums and
elsewhere about the suspected cheating. The news rocked the online poker
world because just months earlier, another online room, Absolute Poker
(www.absolutepoker.com), had admitted that cheating took place in its
room, and was fined by a regulatory agency for allowing it.

Nenad “Serb” Medic is the winner of the first tournament of the 2008

The Serbian poker pro beat out American poker pro Andy Bloch in final
heads-up play to win WSOP Event #1, a $10,000 buy-in, pot-limit Texas
hold ‘em tourney that had 352 entrants and a total prize pool of about
$3.3 million.
