Victory Lane

Written by Tom Somach in Poker News

It took five to win six.

Five years after he won his last World Series of Poker (WSOP) gold bracelet–the fifth of his career–Layne Flack has won his sixth.

Longtime poker pro Flack, whose fifth bracelet came at the 2003 WSOP, has won Event #34 at the 2008 WSOP in Las Vegas.

The event, a $1,500 buy-in, pot-limit Omaha tournament with rebuys, had 320 entrants, 36 payouts and a total prize pool of about $2.4 million.

For the victory, Layne, a resident of Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, earns a cool $577,725.

And bracelet No. 6.

His career earnings from the WSOP now top $2.2 million.

Coming in second in the event was Dan Makowsky of Zurich, Switzerland, making $355,050.

Third was Jacobo Fernandez of Hollywood, Florida, USA, snagging $222,659.

Fourth was Dario “Ryu” Alioto of Palermo, Italy, taking home $180,534.

Fifth was Ted Forrest of Las Vegas, leaving with $144,427.

Sixth was Kyle Kloeckner of St. Louis, Missouri, USA, collecting $114,338.

Seventh was Mike Guzzardi of Melbourne, Australia, guzzling $90,267.

Eighth was Tim West of Los Altos, California, USA, coming east and winning $72,213.

Ninth was Frank Vizza of Cold Spring Harbor, New York, USA, icing $54,160.

Tenth was Kevin O’Donnell of Scottsdale, Arizona, USA, scarfing $36,107.

Well-known poker pros Erik Seidel and Clonie Gowen finished in 21st and 34th places, respectively.

Flack’s half-million-plus payoff is the most he has ever won in any WSOP tournament.

His six career WSOP bracelets puts him in seventh place on the career bracelets list, tied with Men “The Master” Nguyen, T.J. Cloutier and Jay Heimowitz.

Phil “Poker Brat” Hellmuth Jr. tops that list with 11 career WSOP bracelets.

Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson and Johnny “The Orient Express” Chan are next, each with 10.

Amazingly, Flack has made 12 WSOP final tables in his career and come out on top six times, a stunning 50% win rate.
