Denmark Not Rotten
Written by Tom Somach in Poker NewsSomething may be rotten in Denmark, but it’s definitely not at the poker tables.
Danes have now won two of the first three events at the 2008 World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE).
Theo Jorgensen, a 36-year-old poker pro from Copenhagen, Denmark, has won 2008 WSOP Event #3, a pot-limit Omaha tournament that had a buy-in of 5,000 British pounds, or about $10,000.
The tourney, which drew 165 entrants, had a total prize pool of 825,000 pounds, or about $1.65 million.
For the victory, Jorgensen, who’s been a pro for about 15 years, earned 218,626 pounds, or about $437,000.
The win brings his career earnings from tournament poker to about $1.2 million, according to tournament records.
Earlier this week, a fellow countryman, Jesper Hougaard, also of Copenhagen, won 2008 WSOPE Event #1, a no-limit Texas hold ‘em tourney.
Coming in runnerup in Event #3 was Sorel Mizzi of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, who pocketed 132,000 pounds.
Finishing third was Eric “Lowball” Dalby of London, England, who picked up 84,562 pounds.
Ending up fourth was Erik “Lilar” Friberg of Stockholm, Sweden, who took home 66,000 pounds.
Taking fifth spot was Max Pescatori of Milan, Italy, who earned 51,562 pounds.
Coming in sixth was Dave Penly of Woking, England, who grabbed 41,250 pounds.
Ending seventh was Chris “Jesus” Ferguson of Pacific Palisades, California, USA, who nabbed 33,000 pounds.
The No. 8 finisher was Jason Mercier of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA, who snagged 26,812 pounds.
Finishing in ninth place was Tomi Myback of Helsinki, Finland, who earned 22,688 pounds.
Coming in tenth was Ilkka Koskinen of Vaasa, Finland, who won 18,562 pounds.
Event #3 drew many big-name pros who fizzled and did not finish in the money, including Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson, Phil “Poison” Ivey, Phil “Poker Brat” Hellmuth Jr., Barry Greenstein, Layne Flack, John Juanda, Mike “The Mouth” Matusow, Daniel “Kid Poker” Negreanu, Freddy Deeb, Allen Cunningham, Alex “The Mad Russian” Kravchenko and Dave “Devilfish” Ulliot.
The 2008 WSOPE continues in London at the Empire Casino with its fourth and final event, the so-called Main Event.
The Main Event, a no-limit Texas hold ‘em tournament with a buy-in of 10,000 pounds, or about $20,000, began Saturday.
