Juanda Wins It
Written by Tom Somach in Poker NewsNoted poker pro John Juanda is the winner of the Main Event at the second annual World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) at the Empire Casino in London, England.
Juanda, 37, who was born in Indonesia and immigrated to the USA as a youth, collects 868,800 British pounds for the big victory, or about $1.7 million.
And, of course, a WSOPE championship gold bracelet.
He previously won three championship gold bracelets playing in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
His career earnings from playing tournament poker is now just over $8.2 million, according to tournament records.
As for the 2008 WSOPE Main Event, the fourth and final event of the WSOPE, it was a no-limit Texas hold ‘em tourney that had 362 entrants, 36 payouts, a buy-in of 10,000 pounds (about $20,000) and a total prize pool of 3,620,000 pounds (about $7.2 million).
Finishing runnerup in the Main Event to Juanda, who lives in Marina Del Rey, California, USA, was Stanislav Alekhin of Moscow, Russia, who earned 533,950 pounds.
Third was Ivan Demidov, also of Moscow, who picked up 334,850 pounds.
Taking fourth was Bengt Sonnert of Linkoping, Sweden, who pocketed 271,500 pounds.
In fifth place was Canadian native Daniel “Kid Poker” Negreanu, who now lives in Las Vegas and who collected 217,200 pounds.
Coming in sixth was Scott Fischman, also of Las Vegas, who earned 171,950 pounds.
Ending up in seventh place was Robin Keston of London, who snared 135,750 pounds.
The No. 8 finisher was Toni Hiltunen of Lahti, Finland, who picked up 108,600 pounds.
Finishing ninth was Christopher Elliott of Alloa, England, who pocketed 81,450 pounds.
Coming in tenth was Peter Neff of Oak Park, California, USA, who snagged 54,300 pounds.
Other noted names finishing in the money in the event were Mike “The Mouth” Matusow of Las Vegas, who ended in 18th place and earned 36,200 pounds; Erik Seidel of Las Vegas, who ended in 19th place and earned 28,960 pounds; Andy Bloch of Las Vegas, who ended in 23rd place and also earned 28,960 pounds; and Josh Arieh of Atlanta, Georgia, USA, who ended in 33rd place and earned 25,340 pounds.
