VFW Club Raided
Written by Tom Somach in Poker NewsA Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Club in Sanford, Maine, USA, has been raided by the State Police, who confiscated several video poker machines.
According to media reports, members of the Maine State Police’s Special Investigations Unit, armed with a search warrant, raided the club on October 3.
In that raid, police seized five illegal video poker machines and about $5,000 in cash, the reports said.
Under Maine law, video poker machines are legal if used for amusement only.
They are illegal under state law if payoffs are made on winning hands, and anyone making such payoffs is subject to criminal prosecution.
No one has yet been arrested in connection with the raid, but police indicated arrests would be forthcoming, the reports said.
Jim Bachelder, quartermaster of the raided VFW Club, told reporters that the club did not make any payouts to any video poker machine players.
“We have no idea what created this situation for them to come down here,” he said of the raid.
