The 40th annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) got underway Wednesday at
the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, with the
start of WSOP Event #1, a $500 buy-in, no-limit Texas hold ‘em
tournament that was open only to casino employees.
It was the first of 57 separate poker tournaments that will make up the
2009 WSOP.

Bad behavior by poker pro Phil “Poker Brat” Hellmuth Jr. at last year’s
World Series of Poker (WSOP) has led WSOP officials to enact new
etiquette rules for this year’s WSOP.
During the 2008 WSOP Main Event, which was televised on ESPN, Hellmuth
at one point lost a large pot to an opponent and then screamed at the
opponent that he was an “idiot” and “the worst player in history.”

Las Vegas or the annual World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) in London
are men–but that’s no surprise because most poker players are men.
Nevertheless, there are some women who are very good poker players, and
even a few who could be considered great.

Forget about money–the coin of the realm at the World Series of Poker
(WSOP) is the gold bracelet awarded to the winner of each WSOP
tournament.
Hundreds of such bracelets have been handed out in the 39 years the WSOP
has been held, with Phil “Poker Brat” Hellmuth Jr. having won the most
bracelets in his career–11 (World Series of Poker Europe or WSOPE
results are not included).

According to official records, poker malcontent Phil “Poker Brat”
Hellmuth Jr. has finished in the money in 68 different World Series of
Poker (WSOP) tournaments in his career, giving him the most WSOP cashes
of any player in history (World Series of Poker Europe or WSOPE results
are not included).
He’ll be looking to increase that number when the 40th annual WSOP gets
underway next week in Sin City, also known as Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

A Russian Poker Tour tournament in Moscow has been won by–surprise,
surprise–a Russian!
The tourney, officially called the Poker Stars Russian Poker Tour
Moscow, was a no-limit Texas hold ‘em tournament with 206 entrants, 27
payouts and a $7,000 buy-in.

A masked bandit with a shotgun held up a poker tournament at a New
Jersey American Legion hall on Saturday, making off with almost $3,000
in cash.

poker agency Poker Icons (www.pokericons.com).
The signing comes on the heels of the aborting of another deal Gold
inked in February.

State legislators in Illinois are considering legalizing video poker in
the state as part of a plan to raise money for infrastructure needs.
According to media reports, spokespeople for several top state
legislators said Friday that statewide legalization of video poker is
one of several ideas being bandied about as a possible way to help raise
$26 billion that’s needed to repair bridges, roads, tunnels and other
infrastructure in the U.S. state that calls itself the “Land of
Lincoln,” despite the fact that the 16th President was not born there.

A bill that would have legalized the playing of Texas hold ‘em and other
forms of poker in the State of Texas has been abruptly pulled from the
legislative agenda.
According to media reports, State Representative Jose Menendez, who had
planned to introduce the bill into the Texas House of Representatives,
on Friday pulled the bill from consideration.

sign on as a paid shill for online poker room Full Tilt Poker
(www.fulltiltpoker.com), the room announced.
Cheadle, 44, who was nominated for a Best Actor Award for his portrayal
of a hotel boss in the motion picture “Hotel Rwanda,” also appeared in
the films “Ocean’s Eleven,” “Ocean’s Twelve,” “Ocean’s Thirteen,”
“Traffic,” “Hamburger Hill,” “Colors,” “Boogie Nights,” “Bulworth,”
“Crash,” “Talk to Me,” “Rush Hour 2″ and “The Assassination of Richard

In her first major interview since defeating poker pro Annie Duke last
Sunday for the title of TV’s Celebrity Apprentice, comic Joan Rivers
defended her harsh comments about Duke and said Duke actually was
harsher.

Daniel “Kid Poker” Negreanu, the top Canadian poker player in the world,
is a big fan of the American reality TV show “Celebrity Apprentice,” it
turns out.
In fact, he says he’s been watching the just-concluded show all season,
and not just because fellow poker pro Annie Duke, who lost to comic Joan
Rivers Sunday night on the finale, was a contestant on the program.
