Lucky 7th for Ivey
Written by Tom Somach in Poker NewsPoker phenom Phil “Poison” Ivey has won a second championship gold bracelet at the 2009 World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas, giving him an eye-popping seven WSOP bracelets for his outstanding career.
His latest win was in 2009 WSOP Event #25, a combination Omaha and seven-card stud hi-lo tournament.
The tourney had a $2,500 buy-in, an $864,500 total prize pool, 376 entrants and 40 payouts.
The victory earned the low-key Ivey, who lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, $220,538.
The runnerup was Ming Lee of Natick, Massachusetts, USA, snagging $136,292.
Taking third was Juan Carlos “El Matador” Mortensen of Henderson, Nevada, USA, collecting $89,342.
Names of note who also finished in the money in the event include Gavin Smith in 23rd place and Hoyt Corkins in 40th.
Earlier this month, Ivey won 2009 WSOP Event #8, a lowball tourney, earning his sixth career WSOP gold bracelet.
The seven WSOP bracelets Ivey now has for his career puts him in sixth place on the all-time WSOP bracelet list, tied with Billy Baxter, who also has seven in his equally-storied career.
Ahead of Ivey and Baxter on the all-time WSOP gold bracelet list are Erik Seidel with eight bracelets won in his career, Johnny Moss with nine, Johnny “The Orient Express” Chan with 10, Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson with 10 and Phil “Poker Brat” Hellmuth Jr. with 11.
According to WSOP records, Ivey has now earned $3,439,386 in his career playing in WSOP tournaments.
In addition to his seven WSOP victories, he has also finished in the money in 26 other WSOP events over the years.
Amazingly, Ivey is not the first person to win two gold bracelets at this year’s WSOP.
Brock Parker has also won two gold bracelets at this year’s WSOP.
