Sun Poker Review
Previously known as Caribbean Sun Poker, Sun Poker is one of the oldest and most reliable poker websites around. However, due to their monthly bonus, the site tends to draw bonus collectors who play ultra-tight games. This means that for the average tight-aggressive poker player, there will be very little soft competition around, but for the aggressive player who knows how to exploit rocks, this place can be a gold mine. Aggressive players that have reported win rates of 5-10 BB/hour, which is absolutely phenomenal. In addition they offer lots of hold ‘em games, as well as the option to play in Euros, Pounds or US Dollars.
Poker Games Available
For cash games, Sun poker offers a large number of tables for Texas Hold ‘em. Limit fans can enjoy games from $0.25/$0.50 all the way up to $600/$1200, although the highest populated limit is usually $5/$10. No limit players will be able to find tables with blinds of $0.15/$0.25 to $100/$200, although action is severely hampered above $25/$50. Additionally, Sun Poker offers Omaha, Omaha/8, 7 card stud and heads up play.
Tournaments are also available, although not as frequented as cash games. Sit and go tournaments have buy-ins that range from $1 to $500 and boast a reasonably fast filling speed (especially for hold ‘em). Scheduled tournaments run frequently and feature buy-ins from $2 to $10,000. EPT event satellites are also available at Sun Poker.
The Sun Poker software was created and is maintained by Crypto Logic.
Sun Poker features arguably the most beautiful and exotic backgrounds to their lobby screen. The most recent update features a background of palm trees overlooking a sunset over water. The lobby is typical Crypto Logic and is very neatly arranged with an emphasis on providing a lot of information while also reducing clutter. Buttons for the various game categories are located at the top, with buttons just underneath for subcategories of each game. The main window contains table information for the currently highlighted subcategory, with statistics for limit, average pot size, hands per hour and percent seeing the flop available for each table.
The table features an overhead view with no avatars (although players have the option of uploading a picture to represent themselves). The table view overall is 2-dimensional and features chat and note taking functions. The layout overall is very logical, making it very easy for a player to enjoy their poker playing experience.
There are no deposit bonuses or reload bonuses with Sun Poker. Instead, they offer a $100 monthly bonus that players can collect by earning 500 MPPs in a month. This bonus does not require a deposit of $100, although all 500 points must be earned before any of the bonus is released to a player’s account.
My poker points (MPPs) are the heart of the Sun Poker loyalty program. MPPs are calculated in a very straightforward manner that is easy to understand. In cash games, for a rake of $0.25-$0.99 (or the same number in the other two currencies) generated 0.25 MPPs for every player dealt cards in the hand. If the rake surpasses $1, then each player earns 1 MPP instead of 0.25 MPPs. In tournaments, a player earns 3 MPPs for every $1 in tournament fees they pay.
MPPs have a wide range of uses. They can be used to pay for some tournaments in lieu of a buy-in, or alternatively they can be used for MPP-specific freerolls run by Sun Poker. Sun Poker runs weekly as well as monthly MPP freeroll tournaments which can sometimes have very low entrance numbers, making the prize money easier to win. While there are very few direct tangible benefits of MPPs, a good tournament player can earn them quickly and parlay them into a big tournament cash prize.
Sun Poker offers a very large support network, featuring FAQs, site maps, phone, fax, e-mail and live chat support.
Their FAQs cover all aspects of the poker site and are logically organized by category. For a person who can’t find exactly what they’re looking for, the site map is an additional tool used for support. It lists every single page and section on the website and can be used to find a specific page that a player is looking for.
If neither of those options work, Sun Poker also offers phone and fax support (their network is so large that different countries have different numbers, which is why they are not listed here). They additionally offer e-mail support (the address is not listed here for the same reason as the phone numbers) as well as highly-regarded live help support (available from 8am to midnight server time).
